Swedish Meatballs- Perfect For IKEA…And THE WORLD CUP!

Jump to recipe

I know what you’re thinking, “Why does this dude keep making meatballs?” (Check out my other Meatballs, here!) 1) Get over it, they’re delicious! 2) When the US plays Sweden, we need to beat them and eat their food, right? 3) IKEA made me make the Swedish Meatballs…

The Women’s World Cup

Back in 1999, I was all of 9 years old and enthralled with the World Cup. It seemed as though the entire US was captivated by these crazy good soccer players! I mean, we dominated. It was fun for everyone…except our opponents. And then it happened…

The US won the Championship over China in penalties. Then Brandi Chastain took her shirt off… I didn’t think anything of it (cuz I was 9 and was kinda googly eyed lol), but apparently that wasn’t classy. Well, whoever thinks that can STFU. All I see is pure joy and happiness. Of course, being the 20 year anniversary of that occasion, Brandi Chastain got brought up… A LOT. But here we are, doing just fine! Anyway…

The 2019 World Cup…Of Food!

When making food for sporting events, I have always enjoyed making a recipe based on the other team. It gets you out of your comfort zone of making the usual and shows respect to the other team, or something. Before I even realized it was the World Cup, the US was up 13-0 on Thailand. Thai food was out then. I had a busy day on Sunday, so no Chilean food this go around. Then the game against Sweden was announced for Thursday. BAM! I have my country.

Research=Swedish Meatballs

Research, upon research, upon research lead to 2 things: Ligonberries and Swedish Meatballs. I honestly thought the whole Swedish Meatball thing was a stereotype that IKEA took to a new level and that Ligonberries…well, I didn’t even know ligonberries existed.

How It Is Done…

I had a few firsts with this dish but hot damn, was it fun to make! I have never eaten Swedish Meatballs, let alone, cooked a whole batch. Up until now I had never put together my own gravy, just the ones from packets. Lastly, Ligonberry Sauce…what a great creation for man kind. I have never, even through my research, saw the combo of the Meatballs with Ligonberry. Let me tell you…it is worth it!

  1. Dean, Jana Schulz’s mom here, Kathi Groeschel. This recipe looks like the bomb. I want to make swedish meatballs for Christmas and scoured the internet for a good recipe. I’m sticking with this one. I have ligonberry sauce in my pantry that I picked up in door county this past spring. My Mom loved that sauce! Thanks for sharing this and you can bet you just got a new fan to your website. Jana said your BBQ sauce is the best she’s ever had. I’ll order that too, right now. Thanks again and good luck with your business. It looks like you’re off to a fantastic start! Stay healthy!
